A Blissful Reprieve from the Southern Sun
I really love to try and get outside for a good walk every day. This park is perfect for just a little outdoor time – and did just that for me when we lived in Carrboro. It is tucked in between a couple of neighborhoods, so it isn’t huge. But it is big enough that you can pick any of the colored paths that are marked and get in a good hour+ meandering walk. We lived close enough to this park, that I could grab the dogs and a pair of headphones and we could hike, get a little exercise, some fresh air and a conference call in all at the same time. Almost every day, this is what the dogs and I did. We loved it.
The paths wander under a canopy of deciduous and pine trees. The trail is often covered with pine needles and soft on your feet while also buffering the sounds of the road and neighborhoods just beyond. It is pretty, quiet, peaceful and filled with birdsong. The paths go up and down, around and over roots and stumps and across little babbling creeks. It is edged by the yards of the adjacent neighborhoods. Just pick a path and go! The canopy keeps it cooler from the sun’s heat and if it is drizzling it also offers some protection.
We picked the red path for our hike and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing walk under the trees. I never get tired of the smell of pine needles. The park also has a little playground, tennis courts and a baseball field. There is a new bike path that cuts through part of the park as well – which is a great addition since we were last there! Biking riding was a little difficult before without paths (I am not personally a huge fan of city / street riding). During our drives and walks through the area we actually noticed that many more bike paths and bike lanes had been put in place since we were last there. It was great to see that they have been making it much easier to bike areas we never really had a chance to before – so, we added it to the list for next trip!
