Now, either this campground is new or somehow it just flew under the radar before. We’re always on the prowl for a good campground that has solid access to a big(ger) city. But, this was our first time here! There were no events at the State Fair Grounds while we were in town, so the whole area was pretty chill. We have been to the NC State Fair before though (which was really fun!) fand I can see how it could pretty easily get a little rowdy (or at least loud). There were even pedestrian walking paths from the campground to the fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are pretty extensive with multiple areas and buildings, so even driving through the area to get to the campground took a few minutes.
The campground itself is minimalistic – not in size, but in amenities. It’s location is definitely the draw. Reservations, check-in, check-out and payment are all done remotely via the website. There is no one to ask questions of, get a map from or help you find your site. You just pull in, set-up and pull-out – honors style. The sites were decent sized – just long enough for our 34’ Class A plus the car parked sideways in front. With no one there, you could probably pull a longer one in but you’d be off the gravel area a bit. There were no pull-throughs. So, the giant RVs with pull-behind trailers or the enormous campers would likely not fit – or have a tough time doing it. The sites were all full hook-up and garbage was readily available. No WIFI, no restrooms, no laundry, no recycle. The dump on the way out looked a bit worse for wear. Like I said – simple, but the location was great for access to Raleigh, NC State and RDU and Chapel Hill and Durham were both about 30 minutes if there was no traffic.
Tips:
- Make sure you’re good with the remote administration for checking in, out and getting set up. It’s a DIY kind of place.
- Don’t expect to do laundry while you’re here and bring your own WIFI if you need it.
- Plan extra time for anywhere you’re driving – it will always take longer than Google says. And keep your eyes open – driving here is a high-adrenaline sport.
